Write a family history, write a personal history.
Write an autobiography, write a biography.
Write a memoir, write a life story.
It doesnt matter what you call it.
It matters only that you write ityour remembrances, your recollections,
your reminiscences may be the most important thing you leave behind!
Weve all read the memoirs of great people.
But at one time or another, weve all had memories . . . stories . . . tragedies . . . insights
life lessons of our own that we wanted to share
because we are all great people in our own places.
Yes, weve all been a part of making the past the present,
of making history.

is here to help with the rest!
I have been helping write memories for nearly twenty years,
first in the form of oral histories during my years as staff researcher
and publications director for the Montgomery County Historical Society in Dayton, Ohio.
I became even more involved with the craft when I moved south and became a
general editor with the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh, North Carolina.
I refined my skills as project editor, text editor, and design editor of
Tar Heel Junior Historian magazine, a history magazine for
the schoolchildren of North Carolina. Some of the projects I have helped
guide have been published as books, magazine articles, and even museum labels.
Others have led to the creation of study guides for visitors at museums and
historic sites as well as lesson plans, audiovisual scripts,
classroom discussion guides, and teaching activities for classrooms.
